Welcome to this series that I consider as special in my heart. This is where I interview the 2019 draftees, get to know them better, in turn, you get to know them too. Past the scouting reports, past other people's opinions, straight from the source themselves. However, I am going to cover those prospects who did not have the media fanfare, the attention, the spotlight. I am going to focus on the prospects beyond top pick, Hunter Bishop. From Logan Wyatt down, I am doing my hardest to reach out on the day 2 and 3 draftees and put them on the map more to Giants fans.
This interview is very verbatim. I don't want to edit what the prospects said about the topics so that you can feel what type of personality they had. In turn, you see mine as well. I am using initials (mine's W, the draftees depend on the first letter of their first name).
In my first interview, I spent time with Najee Gaskins, the Giants selection in the 20th round out of St. Cloud State University. We talked about his draft story, a bet in his first homer, skillset and more. Overall, I had a blast talking to him, it just felt very natural and a very fun one. Had a lot of laughs while talking to him so I hope you do as well!
W: How is the feeling of being drafted?
N: So I was playing MLB The Show 19 right and I was watching the draft on my laptop and had draft tracker on my phone! So I saw the Twins just selected their pick and so I went back to playing the show and I looked back at the draft tracker and saw my name and I went crazy!!!!! Because I didn’t get a call or anything! I was with my friend Dom and I screamed and he was like what?! And I said just wait!! Then we heard my draft ID number on the laptop and we went crazy!!!!
W:(Has) it sunk it yet that you are a pro baseball player now?
N: No, it has not sunk in that I’m a professional baseball player!
W: Wow. Very cool and completely unexpected! Seems like you are not with your family but with your dudes. I bet your family is tremendously happy with you as well!
N: No they were at work when it happened! But yes they were crying and so happy. My dad and I tried so hard to get to where I am at today and it seemed like I was always put on the back burner or over looked. So when this happened it was like all of our work paid off.
W: Yeah I mean it is time for the overlooked guys to get a shot! I saw your pinned post where your dad went nuts after you hit a homer at Minute Maid. Must have been a surreal experience for you too!
N: Yes, Minute Maid was definitely a great time! The day before, my family and I went out to dinner with my dad's friend and he said if you hit a homer I’m gonna get you this champagne bottle and I was like no way I hit one tomorrow haha. Low key was swinging for the fence the whole day and just got the right pitch and it went out! So I definitely cashed in on that bet!
W: Hey, what better (day) to (drink) the champagne than now!
N: Haha correct!
W: You played for (St. Cloud State) University in the game, right? What prompted you to transfer to (St. Cloud State)?
N: And yes I played for St. Cloud State in that game. And I transferred there out of my juco because I heard they had a good senior class and a bunch of talent and they were willing to take a chance on me so I went with it and I’m glad I went in that direction! Everything happens for a reason is my motto.
W: Worked out hella well for you man! What do you think is the best asset that you can bring to the Giants? People often point out your blazing speed first.
N: I would like to say my speed, but my defense is what I take pride in the most! I like when my pitcher can pitch freely and not worry about giving up hits and stuff but always being able to trust the defense!
W: That is a great feeling for any pitcher indeed. Have you got any post-draft plans right now? Like preparing yourself for the grind of pro baseball?
N: I’m just going to the cages and working out everyday pretty much!
W: Love that you are putting in the work! Do you have any expectations for yourself or any goals that you plan to achieve?
N: My goals are obviously to make it to the league but also be successful in it. There are going to be highs and lows but it’s how you can deal with those lows that will make me successful.
W: Yeah definitely. Even the best has their down days. And I mean, you will join the organization with some very good young players in the farm system like Joey Bart, Heliot Ramos, Marco Luciano, etc. What are your impressions about the Giants and their future?
N: I think the Giants are definitely on the come up! Joey Bart is a phenomenal player, will definitely be an impact player in the Giants future! The Giants have great leadership and that will be a huge factor once those guys come up!
W: I mean you are from the Arizona area so you are probably a DBacks fan.
N: Oh nooooooooo! I’m a huge Barry Bonds fan so I’ve been a Giant fan for a long time!
W: Really? Haha so getting drafted has something extra in it!
N: Absolutely!!!
W: That's great! I think it is time to end this interview. Do you have a message for Giants fans that will read this one?
N: I would like to say thank you to the Giants organization for giving me this opportunity and to my parents for always believing in me! Also, Go Giants!
W: Really great stuff man. I would love to do more talks with you next time! Also, enjoy the fine champagne!
N: Anytime! Will do will do! Thank you!
